Writing from Royal Indigo Villa about the southern coast around us — the towns and villages between Galle and Koggala, the food and local traditions that shape the region, and what staying in a private villa on this part of Sri Lanka can be like. These articles bring together the places, experiences and questions that regularly come up when guests are planning a stay or exploring the south. Some of it is practical — how the coast fits together, how people get around, what to expect at the table. Some of it is simply what we think is worth describing: a morning market, an evening on the ramparts at Galle, the sound of a kottu griddle starting up as the light goes.
We add to it when there is something worth writing about.
From Bentota to Hambantota, the southern coast is not one destination but a dozen — resort towns and working cities, fishing villages, lagoons and long stretches of palm-fringed sand. A look at how the coast fits together, town by town.
The Southern Coast of Sri Lanka
Along the coast between Galle and Koggala, many of the places to stay are private villas — some booked exclusively by one group, some offering individual rooms. What that involves day to day, for couples and for groups travelling together.
Why Choose a Private Villa
Six or eight dishes arrive at once and you build each mouthful yourself. Rice and curry, hoppers, pol roti, fish ambul thiyal, kottu and curd with palm treacle — the food of the south, and why it tastes the way it does.
