When You’re Ready to Leave the Pool, Discover the Best of Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast and Its Timeless Highlights
Golden Shores, Historic Places and Southern Experiences, All Within Reach
From the beauty of Talpe’s Golden Mile to some of the south coast’s most memorable experiences, there is plenty to discover beyond the villa. Explore historic Galle Fort, nearby beaches, temples, village life and national parks, or join our resident chef on a local market visit to select fresh vegetables, fruit and seafood before returning to the villa for a hands-on cooking experience and a delicious dinner prepared together.
MARKET. COOK. FEAST
A Culinary Journey From Market to Table
Begin the day beside the Indian Ocean with our resident chef, exploring Galle’s local fish market as the morning’s catch arrives fresh from the sea. Choose from tuna, crabs, prawns and an ever-changing selection of seafood, then continue through local fruit and vegetable markets filled with tropical colours, aromas and flavours.
Back at Royal Indigo Villa, the experience moves into the kitchen. Our chef will guide you through each stage of preparing the ingredients you selected, introducing traditional Sri Lankan cooking techniques, fragrant spices and the combinations of flavour that have shaped the island’s cuisine for generations. You will not simply watch — you will take part, learning, tasting and preparing the meal alongside him.
As evening settles over the villa, gather outdoors beside the pool, overlooking the Indian Ocean as the sky changes with the colours of sunset. Our team will serve the dishes you helped create while you relax beneath the stars, surrounded by tropical gardens and the gentle sea breeze drifting in from the ocean.
It is more than a cooking lesson. It is a private journey through Sri Lankan food, local life and hospitality — from the morning market to your own table at Royal Indigo Villa.
OUTSIDE THE GATE
A Taste of Timeless Sri Lanka – Where Spices, Traditions & Generations Come Together
Stay by the pool as long as you like. But when you are ready, the south has forts to walk, temples to find, markets to wander and national parks to lose a day in. Our Villa Manager is always happy to arrange the journey for you.
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Originally established by the Portuguese in the 16th century and extensively developed under Dutch rule in the 17th and 18th centuries, it remains one of the best-preserved examples of a European-built fortified town in South Asia.
Its historic ramparts, bastions, narrow streets, courtyards and colonial-era buildings create a distinctive blend of European and South Asian architectural influences. Today, the Fort is also home to museums, churches, boutiques, jewellery shops, cafés and restaurants, making it a wonderful place to wander, shop, enjoy ocean views and stop for a memorable meal with Sri Lankan flavours.
Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya, located at Yatagala near Unawatuna, is a historic Buddhist temple set among impressive granite rock formations. The temple is known for its cave shrine, Buddha images, Bodhi tree and traditional mural paintings, all within a peaceful setting overlooking the surrounding countryside.
The temple’s origins are traditionally associated with the reign of King Devanampiyatissa of the ancient Anuradhapura Kingdom, one of the important early Buddhist rulers of Sri Lanka and a contemporary of the Indian Emperor Ashoka of India.
Away from the busy coastline, Yatagala offers visitors a quieter glimpse into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and living religious traditions. Visitors should dress respectfully, remove footwear where required and maintain a quiet and respectful manner within the temple grounds.
Village Life & Paddy Fields. Step away from the coastline and discover the peaceful countryside of southern Sri Lanka, where lush green paddy fields stretch beneath coconut palms and tropical greenery. Around the villages inland from Thalpe and the wider Galle region, rice fields, home gardens and quiet rural roads reveal a slower rhythm of everyday life.
Take a leisurely journey through the countryside and enjoy the changing shades of green, tropical vegetation, birdlife and traditional agricultural landscapes — a tranquil contrast to the beaches of Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
Unawatuna Beach is one of the best-known and most visited beaches on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, located just southeast of Galle. Its curved sandy bay, tropical setting and lively surroundings, with cafés, restaurants and nearby attractions, make it a popular stop for both local and international visitors travelling along the southern coastline.
The area is also known for coral reefs and marine life, including sea turtles. The wider Unawatuna area is also notable for nearby places of cultural and religious interest, including Rumassala, which is associated with the Ramayana tradition, and the Japanese Peace Pagoda overlooking the coast.
Sri Lanka’s Traditional Handloom Craft through workshops and weaving centres in the Galle region. Visitors can usually watch traditional weaving techniques, see how colourful textiles are produced and browse locally made handloom products available for purchase.
Traditional Sri Lankan Village Cuisine. Experience the rich flavours of Sri Lankan home-style cooking, where rice, curries, vegetables, sambols and seafood are traditionally prepared using fragrant spices and time-honoured methods. In the Galle and Unawatuna area, visitors can find local dining and cooking experiences where dishes may be prepared in traditional clay pots, with some kitchens also using open-hearth cooking methods.
It is a wonderful way to discover another side of Sri Lankan food culture — colourful curries, fresh local ingredients and recipes shaped by generations of family cooking, served in a relaxed and authentic setting.
Turtle Beach, located along the coastline between Unawatuna and Thalpe and close to Royal Indigo Villa, is known for sightings of large sea turtles that sometimes move into the shallow coastal waters. Seeing these impressive marine animals at close range can be a memorable experience for both local and international visitors.
The area offers a special opportunity to observe and photograph sea turtles in their natural environment, creating a lasting memory of Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
Sri Lankan Spices & Local Markets. Discover the aromas and flavours of Sri Lanka through spice gardens, local markets and specialist spice shops in the Galle region. Visitors can explore ingredients commonly used in Sri Lankan cooking, including cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, dried chillies, turmeric, cumin, coriander, fenugreek, mustard seeds and traditional curry blends.
Galle is one of Sri Lanka’s principal Ceylon cinnamon-growing districts, and Sri Lanka is the world’s leading producer of true Ceylon cinnamon, accounting for the great majority of global production. This gives visitors an added connection to one of the island’s best-known spices and its long-standing place in Sri Lankan food and trade.
Udawalawe Wildlife Safari. Set out early from Royal Indigo Villa for a full-day journey to Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s best-known wildlife destinations and an important habitat for wild Asian elephants. The park’s open grasslands, scrub, forests and reservoir create opportunities to see elephants, water buffalo, deer, monkeys, crocodiles and a wide variety of birdlife in their natural surroundings.
Explore the park by safari jeep and take in its changing landscapes while watching for wildlife along the way. Elephant sightings are one of Udawalawe’s main attractions, although all wildlife encounters depend on nature and can never be guaranteed.
A visit can also be combined with the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, located near the national park. Established in 1995, the centre cares for orphaned elephant calves with the aim of rehabilitating suitable animals and returning them to the wild. With an early departure from Royal Indigo Villa, the excursion can be planned as a full-day experience, returning to the villa later the same day.
