A visit to Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the most peaceful things to do in Talpe, offering a deep dive into Sri Lanka’s spiritual and historical heritage. Located just a short drive from the coast, this ancient rock temple is over 1,200 years old and nestled amid lush greenery. Carved into a massive granite boulder, it features a serene reclining Buddha statue, centuries-old murals, and quiet meditation spaces. The temple’s elevated position provides panoramic views of surrounding paddy fields and jungle, enhancing its tranquil atmosphere.
Unlike more touristy sites, it remains calm and uncrowded, perfect for quiet reflection. Resident monks maintain the temple, and visitors are welcome to observe or engage in respectful meditation. Whether you’re seeking cultural insights, spiritual serenity, or hidden gems among the things to do in Talpe, Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya offers a memorable and meaningful experience rich in tradition and natural beauty.
As part of our community support in Talpe we support both the local Buddhist Temple and School. Perhaps you would like to renew your wedding vows in the presence of and being blessed by one of the local Monks. We can arrange to visit one of three beautiful temples , walking distance or a short drive in the Hinterland directly behind the Villa. On the way visit the beautiful Talpe Railway Station which is another local institution we sponsor. Maybe take the train to Galle if you are game.
Exploring the hinterland can be done on foot , on a Tuk Tuk tour or on an organised Bike Tour. Enjoy the lush green surrounds complete with rice paddies, coconut, banana and other palms, and many gorgeous flowers. It’s not just the vegetation that’s amazing, look out for a couple of species of local monkeys, many peacocks and hens, stunning blue Kingfishers and many other birds. Most guests miss this experience as they stay beachside. The Hinterland commences just a few hundred metres behind the Villa.
